16 And he said unto me: Knowest thou the condescension of God?
17 And I said unto him: I know that he loveth his children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things.
This week as I was reading Nephi’s vision of the tree of life, I really loved 1 Nephi 11:16-17. In these verses, an angel is showing Nephi Mary and the baby Jesus and the angel asks Nephi if he knows the plan of God (essentially) and Nephi replies that he doesn’t know the meaning of all things, but he does know that God loves His children.
I love this passage because it is so simple and encapsulates his faith in the Lord and the way I try to respond to questions I have. I tell myself that I don’t know why something is the way it is, but because I know that without a doubt God loves His children, I am willing to learn and want to learn. I feel like it is almost the foundational truth to the gospel. Once we know that God loves us, we can know that any plan that God has for us will be good and any instruction or commandment He gives to us is because He loves us. And then we obey the commandments as a way to show God that we love Him too.
The idea that we don’t have to know everything as long as we know that God loves us is so comforting. It’s a preface to any question we can have or any revelation we receive.
This week I felt like I should take a picture of my ministering sister, Ashley, so I reached out to her. She said yes, but that she couldn’t do it until next week, so I prayed again and asked Kat, my roommate, if I could make a portrait of her this week. My goal was to capture Kat as more than her likeness. I prayed to be able to see Kat as God does and to hopefully be able to capture it, too. I don't think there is any way to fully get a person in a picture, but I tried to come as close as I could.

I love the thought that you should start with knowing God loves his children. It IS foundational--and did you notice that even though Nephi wasn't certain of the meaning, he actually got it spot on? I like that too.
